Robson, decd. THIS little church, now some years old, stands on the sea coast [just to the north of Seaham Harbour, on the B], six miles south of the town of Sunderland, in the County of Durham. It is almost unique in that it has come down to us from the distant past without any great alteration. In size it is practically the same to-day as it was when it was first built. For centuries this church supplied the spiritual needs of the inhabitants of two little villages, Seaham and Seaton, and also of the dwellers in the scattered farmsteads.
Here throughout the ages, the parishioners were christened, married, and eventually buried. The upkeep of the nave was the responsibility of the people, and that little nave, only 47 feet by 17 feet, still stands today, without aisles, as it was originally built, kept in repair by countless generations of people. This nave was more to them than a place of worship. It was, with the exception of the Manor House, the only building of any size in the parish, and for centuries perhaps the only building constructed of stone.
Here meetings could be held, local affairs discussed, officers elected, and decisions made. It was the one centre of culture and learning in their lives, affording some relief to the monotony of their drab workaday existence.

I basically spent the weekend eating, drinking and being my usual merry self jokes. Saturday was all about revamping old blog posts and woefully reliving my time in New Zealand. Interspersed with episodes of Pretty Little Liars ; it was a pretty perfect lazy day, while still being productive. A moment to talk about my new addiction, please.

year at the Byron Heights development in Seaham ahead of the initial completion date, due to a high demand for the site’s properties.
This blog is about Seaham, a small town in County Durham, on the coast between Sunderland and Middlesborough, with a population of about 20, It was one of the places where my dad carried out post-mortem examinations in the local mortuary, when he had finished his army service as a doctor in the s. If it was heavy and industrial, Seaham did it. There were three coal mines in the town, foundries, brickworks, docks, huge coal staithes, a whole mass of railway lines and marshalling yards, and fishing boats.
The air was horrendously polluted and as a kid I learnt how to spell pneumoconiosis and other lethal lung diseases before I could spell cat. The church was an Anglo-Saxon foundation with parts of it dating back to the 7th century. The Collingwood family, a well-known name in the North-East, sold their Seaham estate to the Milbanke family in c. This building forms the nucleus of the modern luxury hotel and spa.
It was in this period that a very unlikely celebrity appeared in Seaham to put it on the social radar, George Gordon, Lord Byron. By about , Byron was a well-known poet and an extremely well-known public figure, as much for his hair-raising lifestyle, fairly shocking even by modern standards, as for his literary talents. Through Caroline he met Annabella Milbanke, the daughter of Sir Ralph, and rather strangely, the couple hit it off, rather strangely because Annabella was a highly educated, highly intelligent woman with a strong religious streak.
Sir Ralph invited Byron to Seaham. But I saw the sea once more in all the glories of surf and foam. How has Seaham celebrated its association with Byron?
